RavenPack’s Chief Data Scientist gave a keynote address and participated in a panel about structured versus unstructured data in this RavenPack-sponsored event.
The Battle of the Quants event is where solution providers, investors, and hedge funds come to find up-to-date information in the quant space, hear where allocations are generating the most alpha, and find out what’s new in quant fund strategies.
Peter Hafez, our Chief Data Scientist, gave a keynote address, titled "Exploiting Alternative Data in the Investment Process - Bringing semantic intelligence to financial markets". The emergence of big data in finance has shifted the alpha focus away from being faster to being smarter and more efficient than the competition. Access to alternative data sources is considered a key input to such a process. During his talk, Peter Hafez will provide an overview of the changing investment landscape and provide the “winning formula” for successful quant investing. He’ll discuss issues related to unstructured content, crowd-sources alpha, and proprietary vs. public content.
He also participated in a panel titled “Battle: Structured Data vs. Unstructured Data”.
You can see the full conference agenda here . Peter's slides are available.

High inflation has returned in developed markets after decades of lying low. In our latest paper, we show how to build an inflation-based asset allocation strategy using sentiment data and we illustrate that sentiment-based strategies outperform models that depend merely on past observed inflation values.
This year's RavenPack Research Symposium brought two intense days of knowledge sharing in London and New York, from 25 top experts in natural language processing, quantitative investing and machine learning. Together, we explored how firms can leverage new language models to generate alpha, better manage risk and respond to calls for more sustainable investment practices.
Human capital is at the heart of value creation. Our latest research demonstrates how unprecedented workforce insights, sourced from over 200 million job postings, can generate more alpha.
