Amy Kim on Leadership and Growth: "Lift as You Rise"

March 12, 2025

RavenPack's Chief Business Officer shares how she empowers teams, scales businesses, and mentors future female leaders.

We sat down with Amy Kim about her approach to driving growth, focusing on standardization, repeatability, and scalability. In this conversation, she shares insights on leadership, AI's role in business, and why empowering others as you rise is the key to long-term success.

Amy, your track record shows impressive revenue growth across multiple organizations. If you had to distill your growth philosophy into three words, what would they be and why?

The three words that define my growth philosophy are standardization, repeatability, and scale. Standardization brings predictability because we can teach individuals a unified best practice that has been proven. Once we establish that, we create consistency through repeatability. When we achieve both standardization and repeatability, we generate predictability, which then enables scalability. This is what drives the exponential growth that organizations seek.

What's a leadership lesson you had to learn the hard way, and how has it shaped your approach today?

One of the hardest leadership lessons I learned was to enable rather than command. Many perceive leadership as a top-down, hierarchical structure. However, as I advanced in my career, I realized that to scale effectively, I needed to provide direction, vision, and clarity, without micromanaging. My role isn't to dictate every step but to help people understand what needs to be done, how it can be achieved, and empower them to execute it. Many first-time managers, including myself, mistakenly equate managing with commanding. Over time, I've learned that true leadership lies in inspiring and enabling others to move forward with confidence and purpose.

Many executives are still figuring out how AI fits into their business model. What's your biggest piece of advice for leaders trying to leverage AI effectively?

Focus on AI applications that enhance your team's productivity. Instead of implementing AI for AI's sake, find solutions that integrate seamlessly into existing workflows and accelerate desired outcomes. AI should make work easier, improve output quality, and free up time for teams to focus on more meaningful, high-impact tasks. By doing so, employees can enjoy their work more while also maintaining a healthier work-life balance.

The most rewarding phase of my career has been developing, hiring, and growing high-performing teams.

What has been the most rewarding phase of your career so far?

The most rewarding phase of my career has been developing, hiring, and growing high-performing teams. I find immense satisfaction in seeing individuals thrive in a hardworking yet enjoyable environment. My passion for learning is matched by my commitment to fostering growth within my teams, and I value the mutual learning that happens in a collaborative setting.

You mentor female entrepreneurs and executives. What's one piece of advice you always share with rising women leaders?

Share your success and experiences with the next generation. I truly believe in the philosophy of "lift as you rise" - supporting highly qualified women as they grow, develop, and make an impact not just in business but in society as a whole. It's inspiring to see more women in the workforce today, serving as role models not only for other women but for the broader professional community.

If you could have dinner with any three business leaders (past or present), who would they be and why?

Warren Buffett - I admire his wisdom and ability to foresee the future potential of industries and companies.

Masayoshi Son – his exceptional ability to build and invest in future tech trends is truly visionary.

Sheryl Sandberg – as a female leader, she brought stability, trust, and maturity to organizations, and I deeply respect her leadership and operational expertise.
