Join Industry Leaders
For almost a decade, RavenPack Symposiums have consistently provided data-driven finance professionals with riveting forward-looking content, new research and insights, and practical use cases from industry leaders and top scholars.
This edition brought together top experts in data monetization, privacy, and protection to explore how firms can leverage data to not only generate alpha, but to respond to new regulatory requirements, and calls for more socially responsible investment practices around the use of alternative data.
This RavenPack Symposium event was free to attend (by invitation only) and took place in London on May 23, 2019.
Keynote Speaker: Glenn Greenwald
Glenn Greenwald is a Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist, and the author of several bestsellers including “No Place to Hide,” based on the U.S. surveillance state and his experiences reporting on the Edward Snowden documents around the world. He is acclaimed as one of the 25 most influential political commentators by The Atlantic and one of America's top 10 opinion writers by Newsweek. He is a frequent guest on CNN, MSNBC, and various other television and radio outlets. Greenwald is also a former constitutional and civil rights litigator.
This RavenPack Symposium brought together top experts in data protection, privacy, and monetization to explore how firms can leverage Big Data to not only generate alpha, but to respond to new regulatory requirements, and calls for more socially responsible investment practices.
Digital conglomerates like Facebook, Google, and Amazon are capturing enormous amounts of data on citizens and institutions. The world’s largest tech companies know more about you than literally anyone else, including more than most government agencies. These large, diverse, and fast moving data flows also known as “Big Data” are becoming a form of currency, exchanged by the most influential players in our digital economy. Within finance, Big Data has become increasingly important to achieve operational and investment alpha. While data monetization becomes a crucial part of their strategy, financial institutions must address the risks associated with data privacy, the sourcing of alternative data, data leaks and security breaches, and learn how to mitigate those risks.
The right of privacy is typically debated as a political and ethical question. And it most certainly is that: the extent to which citizens are willing to have powerful governmental and corporate entities know intimate details of their lives, choices and actions in exchange for promised benefits plays a crucial role in how various components of our society is shaped. But lately the question of privacy has taken on a whole new significance: namely, the economic imperative for data managers and companies to balance the commercial benefits of exploiting personal data with the commercial lost of developing a reputation as an unreliable guardian of users' privacy. Glenn Greenwald has worked at the intersection of all of the complex and nuanced competition and values and explores the latest innovations, debates and ideas that shape our understanding of how to safeguard personal privacy in an era that increasingly demands its invasion.
Presentation - Data Protection, Sourcing & Privacy
The FIN7 cybercrime gang (also known as Carbanak) are responsible for stealing over one billion dollars from banks and financial institutions around the world, targeting individuals involved in SEC filings. How did they do it? Who are the people behind FIN7? And what can be done to protect against this and other attacks by sophisticated organised hacking gangs? Computer security expert Graham Cluley offers practical insight on how financial firms are being targeted, and shines some light on a mysterious and elusive global crime ring.
Panel - Data Protection, Sourcing & Privacy
Practically every person on this planet generates some form of data (also known as “data exhaust”). With five billion people globally having a mobile phone connection, every call, message, purchase or internet search we make, shapes our lives while leaving a digital footprint. Even when we walk on busy city streets, CCTV cameras capture our physical movements while our smartphones track our every location. There is a multi-billion dollar data industry that profits from trading these private details without you really knowing how they do it. Our expert panelists will discuss how governments and corporations go about harvesting information about you, what they do with it, who they provide it to, whether it is right or wrong and even how much money is being made from your personal data.
Presentation - Monetizing Big Data
We generate too many emails, store too many files and have more information than we know about or are able to handle. While conversations across email and messengers are growing senseless, our data is mostly unused, fragmented and decentralized making it impossible to keep track, let alone know exactly what we have. While organizations believe there is value in their own data, the challenge is finding ways to monetize it. In this presentation, Peter Hafez will present a real case study showcasing how a fundamental asset management firm is leveraging RavenPack technology to transform their own emails, messages, and files into trading signals to create alpha generating strategies.

Presentation - Monetizing Big Data
Many recent machine learning studies related to equity portfolio management focus on forecasting expected returns despite the relatively small signal to noise ratio in such exercises. Forecasting risk such as stock beta is important in many practical applications. In this talk, we will discuss the benefits of using machine learning to forecast equity beta. In addition to common fundamental variables and historical beta we also incorporate equity sentiment data into the set of predictor variables.
Presentation - Monetizing Big Data
Nowcasting can play a fundamental role in effective dynamic asset allocation by accurately assessing macro and market conditions in real-time. Incorporating new disruptive innovations, such as big data, into an existing investment process is both critical for continued success and not without perils. In this talk, we will discuss an approach to harness big data and improve an existing nowcasting framework in order to better understand the risks and potentially enhancing the performance of investments decisions.
Presentation - Monetizing Big Data
For systematic investors, the recent explosion of non-traditional datasets presents both an opportunity and a challenge. The potential value of an emerging dataset is often unclear and it can be hard to decide where to prioritize research effort. Poorly labelled data and short histories are common. This talk will discuss how alternative data can be integrated into a systematic investment process and give an overview of some of the techniques that Cantab uses to enhance the value that alternative data can contribute to a portfolio.
Panel - Monetizing Big Data
Some of today’s most successful companies have demonstrated that data appreciates in value when translated into meaningful information. Retailers are paying billions of dollars to banks so they can send targeted discount offers directly to customers by analyzing their shopping habits from their credit card transactions. Investment firms are paying a premium to service providers that mine people’s email inboxes to look for receipts that show what products and services they tend to buy. For years, quantitative hedge funds have successfully analyzed large volumes of news and social media to generate excess returns. In this panel, our distinguished speakers will discuss how financial institutions are going about monetizing big data sources and touch on some of the difficulties and challenges faced by the industry in generating real monetary returns from these efforts.
Presentation - Monetizing Big Data
Application of Machine Learning in quant investments has been one of the most overhyped topics for the last 3 years. Even if nowadays most of the academic and practitioners acknowledged the benefits of ML, common misperceptions regarding the field of application of ML are still used to discredit it in quant investments. In this talk we will review some of the main misperceptions and wrong assumptions about applications of ML in systematic investments.
Panel - Looking Towards the Future
The digital transformation of our society is unfolding at a rapid pace, creating a pervasive information asymmetry, which crosses many divides, including disparities between rich and poor, companies and governments, and humans vs machines. Data flows have transformed commerce and made data the most valuable asset in today’s economy. Those who control data are the “new money” in today’s society, having quickly acquired wealth and economic dominance through the use of technology and total information awareness. Whoever controls the data controls who and what interacts with it. Our distinguished panelists will talk about the implications of living in a data-driven economy, dominated by those who have access to data and artificial intelligence, and how this paradigm shift will affect the future of business and finance.
